Frequently Asked Questions
Transformer Maintenance & Testing
Why does my transformer need regular maintenance?
Your transformer is the most important part of your power system. When one is poorly installed or isn’t maintained, it can fail, leading to long downtime and costly repairs. Routine testing and upkeep extend its life and keep it running efficiently. Pair it with substation equipment service for full coverage.
What transformer tests do you perform?
We do complete electrical testing as defined by IEEE and NETA. That includes insulation resistance (Megger), winding resistance, power factor, turns ratio, leakage reactance and sweep frequency response analysis (SFRA). Baseline tests give you a reference point, and diagnostic tests show what has changed since. See our full range of electrical testing services.
Can you process or replace transformer oil on site?
Yes. We have oil processing rigs nationwide, including the Baron high-vacuum system. It parks right next to your transformer and monitors its own performance as it runs. We handle vacuum filling, heating, circulation and dry-out, and we can replace fluids with mineral oil, FR3 or Luminol.
Repairs, Installation & Emergencies
Do you repair transformers from any manufacturer?
Yes, we repair transformers from all OEMs. That covers load tap changers, complete regasketing, bushings and gauges, and cooling equipment such as radiators, coolers, pumps and fans. See everything we cover on our transformer services page.
Can you install a new transformer?
Yes, we handle the full job: assembly, oil processing and vacuum filling, LTC and control wiring. We also test the unit before and after installation to confirm everything is right before it goes into service. Larger projects can tie into our substation and commissioning services.
What if my transformer fails unexpectedly?
Call our 24/7 line at 888-683-3630. Our emergency team can mobilize to your site within 24 hours, diagnose the problem, build a plan and get to work, including oil processing and parts. If the failure affects connected equipment like isolated phase bus duct, we can repair that too.
Monitoring with DataMax
What is DataMax, and how does it help?
DataMax is a communication hub for your transformer sensors. It connects DGA monitors such as Camlin, plus temperature, bushing and camera devices, and sends all that data out through one path. Your team can catch early warning signs and step in before a failure. Learn more about DataMax.
Will DataMax work with my substation’s existing setup?
It’s designed to. DataMax connects to the monitoring devices you already have and sends data over the path you choose: fiber, cellular, radio or ethernet. That includes a secure private cellular network built for utilities. The result is less trenching and conduit in a crowded yard, plus real-time alerts with the Annunciator option.
