Frequently Asked Questions
Who We Work With
Who do you provide transmission and distribution engineering services for?
We support utilities, ISOs and RTOs, independent power producers, renewable energy and storage developers, generation owners, investors, and large commercial and industrial customers—including data centers. Our services cover interconnection, power system studies, modeling, compliance and engineering for facilities ranging from 480 V to 765 kV.
Who will work on my project?
Your project is supported by engineers with experience in utility and ISO/RTO planning, generation interconnection, power system modeling and plant performance. We bring together specialists suited to your project’s technical requirements, with senior engineering oversight and computing resources for large and complex studies.
Generator Interconnection
How do you support generator interconnection projects?
We support projects from site selection and pre-queue screening through application submission, interconnection studies, construction and commercial operation. Depending on the region, this includes cluster studies, system impact studies, facilities studies and affected-system assessments. Our experience spans all seven U.S. ISO/RTO regions—PJM, MISO, SPP, ERCOT, CAISO, NYISO and ISO New England—as well as utility territories outside those regions.
Can you prepare interconnection applications and model submissions?
Yes. We help prepare application packages, equipment data, single-line diagrams, and power flow, dynamic and electromagnetic transient (EMT) models. We review submissions against the applicable utility or ISO/RTO requirements and support responses to technical comments, model updates and subsequent submission milestones.
What if my interconnection request faces delays or costly upgrades?
We independently review study results, evaluate the assumptions driving identified constraints, and assess potential mitigation options. These may include alternative points of interconnection, plant configuration changes, reactive power support or operating limits. We also assess congestion and curtailment exposure to help you understand project risks and make informed development decisions.
Large Loads & Data Centers
Can you help connect a data center or other large load to the grid?
Yes. We support site screening, utility coordination, load interconnection applications and power system studies for data centers and other large industrial facilities. Our work evaluates available capacity, phased load growth, potential network upgrades and the effects of load behavior on grid reliability. We also model UPS systems, backup generation and battery storage where relevant to the facility’s design.
Transmission Planning & Modeling
What transmission planning studies do you perform?
We perform power flow and contingency analysis, short-circuit studies, voltage and transient stability studies, small-signal analysis and EMT simulations. Our work includes transmission expansion, generation and load integration, reactive power planning, remedial action schemes, and black-start and restoration assessments. We use tools such as PSS®E, PSCAD, TARA, DSA Tools and ASPEN, selected to match the study requirements.
Can you develop and validate models for generation, storage and grid-support equipment?
Yes. We develop, review and validate models for solar PV, wind, battery storage, conventional generation, large loads and equipment such as STATCOMs and synchronous condensers. Our services include model quality testing, control tuning, benchmarking between simulation platforms, and updates to reflect as-built equipment and settings. Where appropriate, we develop and benchmark generic representations against detailed models.
When are EMT studies needed, and how can you help?
EMT studies provide detailed insight into fast electrical and control interactions that may require analysis beyond conventional power system simulations. We support projects involving inverter-based resources, weak-grid conditions, complex plant controls and large electronic loads. Our services include PSCAD model development, model quality testing, ride-through assessments, control interaction analysis and mitigation studies tailored to the applicable requirements.
Compliance & Project Decisions
Can you help with NERC and ISO/RTO requirements?
Yes. We support requirements assessments, compliance studies, model verification, testing plans and technical documentation for generation and transmission facilities. Our services include support for applicable MOD-025, MOD-026 and MOD-027 requirements, as well as PRC standards such as PRC-019, PRC-024, PRC-025, PRC-028 and PRC-029. Where field testing or equipment changes are needed, we coordinate with RMS Energy’s testing, commissioning and engineering teams.
Can you support project acquisitions and technical due diligence?
Yes. We review interconnection status, study results, network upgrade exposure, plant models, equipment capabilities and compliance documentation. We help developers, owners and investors identify technical gaps and potential cost or schedule risks before an acquisition, financing decision or major project commitment.
Can you help us evaluate whether a project or upgrade makes business sense?
Yes. We assess the technical factors that influence project value, including interconnection feasibility, network upgrade exposure, operating constraints, congestion and curtailment risk. We compare development and mitigation options so you can weigh potential benefits against cost, schedule and execution risk.
